Establishing shots

An establishing shot is a shot at the beginning of a scene that shows us the location, the environment and often we can tell what time it is.

This is a shot from the series ‘Game of Thrones’, it introduces one of the main locations from the series and shows the viewer the surroundings and the environment.From this shot we can already tell that the landscape is bleak and barren, it sets the mood for the following scene. We can also see some characters already in the scene, if they are close enough to see we can also get a feel for the costume and more insight into the conditions of the area.
